Here’s your chance to learn the story of Juneteenth from an actual historian!
I conducted this teach-in last year to help people understand the history, culture, and significance of this holiday.
In less an hour (much less at 1.5x speed!) you’ll learn about:
General Order No. 3—Discover what this primary source actually said and how it contained elements of both freedom and prejudice.
Race-based chattel slavery—You can’t appreciate the joy of Juneteenth unless you understand the sorrow of slavery.
Juneteenth Flag—Learn what each element of the flag symbolizes and why it’s important to the holiday.
How to celebrate Juneteenth—Get some ideas for what to do to commemorate the holiday and support Black people
One of the best ways to mark the Juneteenth holiday is by learning about the profound significance of freedom and the resilience of Black people.
Go beyond superficial social media posts and the truncated data provided by most news outlets. Watch this Juneteenth teach-in for historical context and insightful commentary.
As you think about how to celebrate Juneteenth consider supporting this publication as a paid subscriber and/or pre-ordering my book The Spirit of Justice: True Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance.

Jemar, as a white historian, I have discovered the importance and the power of celebrating Juneteenth. I want to avoid the tendency of white people to appropriate cultural elements from the Black community, but I am trying to get white folks involved in Juneteenth celebrations. I wrote a piece on Juneteenth this week myself, and I'd be honored if you would give it a read and let me have any feedback, honest feedback good or bad. That is how we get better. Thank you for your teach-in Your thoughts and comments were well received by me and I feel much better informed about Juneteenth as a holiday to be celebrated and/or commemorated.
