As of this writing my Gmail account has 63,504 unread emails.
Thank you. Thank you.
I could not have achieved this milestone without years of dedicated neglect, countless “I’ll get back to this” sentiments, and innumerable intentions to read this message “someday.”
Actually, I have several email accounts, and this is the one I use for all those online sign ups they make you do.
I’ve been gradually unsubscribing from most of those lists, but I haven’t gotten to them all yet and the unread emails keep piling up.

Maybe you’re like me with thousands (or tens of thousands) of emails in a backlog.
Maybe you’ve made a resolution to get to “inbox zero” everyday, but a few consistent senders clutter things up.
Maybe you just want to purge your inbox to relieve yourself of the guilt and burden of having so many unread messages.
Well, I don’t want my Footnotes Substack to weigh you down.
So here is your opportunity to BE FREE.
Unsubscribe.
I really mean it. I’m inviting you to unsubscribe if you do not find value in this publication or you simply don’t have time to read it as much as you’d like.
Don’t get me wrong. I’d love for you to stay. But only if this is reading you want to do and can make time for.
I don’t want Footnotes to add to your inbox woes.
So, unsubscribe. No hard feelings. I won’t take it personally. This is a mutual parting of the ways.
Who knows? Maybe someday when your circumstances change, you’ll sign up again.
But no pressure.
All that being said…
We’re getting closer and closer to the presidential election in November 2024. I’m going to have a lot more content on faith, politics, white Christian nationalism, and what we can do about it.
Just last week, I published some of my most popular posts of the year and my insights got me quoted in CNN.
So maybe you’re reading this and instead of unsubscribing, it’s your time to become a paid subscriber.
My thinking is this…either you decide in this moment that you can’t make the commitment and unsubscribe or you decide to increase your commitment and upgrade to paid.
It’s a decision point for you either way.
And maybe I can make that decision a little easier.
If you become a paid subscriber within 24-hours of this article’s publication, I’ll enter you into a drawing for one of five FREE signed copies of my forthcoming book The Spirit of Justice.
I’ll also send you a .pdf of the first chapter of the book and a video of my keynote presentation from The Color of Compromise five-year anniversary event, “What Historical Truth-Seeking Requires.”
These exclusive bonuses are only available to readers who become paid subscribers in next 24-hours from when I publish this article.
Plus, as a paid subscriber you are the only ones who get to comment on articles I publish. You get discounts for Justice Takes Sides merchandise, and you’ll be the only ones invited to regular live online events just for paid subscribers.
Either way…if you unsubscribe or become a new paid subscriber, I appreciate you.
Really. I appreciate you for your curiosity about race and history and your commitment to being part of the solution to contemporary issues of racism.
We’ll always have that in common.
Onward.
