New Book Alert! Faithful Antiracism: Moving Past Talk to Systemic Change
A practical guide from a sociological, psychological, and Christian perspective
There are so many great books about race and history. But it’s hard to keep up! I’m glad to share my recommendations with you. If you’d like more, please consider becoming a paid subscriber today!
In 2020 we saw a historic uprising for racial justice. Spurred by the gruesome murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, people all over the world shouted “Black Lives Matter” and demanded change.
In the midst of the uproar, people also bought books to help the understand racism. They bought lots of them…including my own, The Color of Compromise.
For several years, people consumed information that described the problem of racism. In a short time, however, people wanted help not simply to understand but to act.
I often hear the question, “What do we do about racism?” I’m glad to have another resource I can recommend.
Faithful Antiracism: Moving Past Talk to Systemic Change by Dr. Christina Edmondson and Chad Brennan gets to the practical aspects of what it takes to put antiracism into action.
Each chapter has insightful and actionable recommendations. It is best read with a group and I was pleased to see well-thought out and meaningful discussion questions that are bound to unearth assumptions and generate good ideas.
Undergirding the book is data from the landmark Race, Religion, and Justice Project led by Dr. Michael Emerson (Divided by Faith). It is “one of the largest studies ever conducted of racial dynamics in U.S. Christianity.”
Here’s a look at the table of contents so you know what to expect.
Dr. Christina and I also had a fantastic conversation about the book and about approaching the issue of racism from within our respective disciplines of psychology and history. Click the picture below for the link.
Below is my endorsement for the book.
"Faithful Antiracism is bound to become a standard in churches and religious organizations that aspire to pursue racial justice. Dr. Christina Edmondson and Chad Brennan combine the precision of scholars with the compassion of pastors who patiently love and care for others. This book is packed with application and is ready-made for group or individual study. Whether you've been committed to antiracism for years or you are just beginning the journey, Faithful Antiracism will equip and inspire you for the struggle."
