As a student of history I value anniversaries.
Like a chronological liturgy, anniversaries give us the regular opportunity to contemplate where we have been and ask ourselves how the past guides into the future.
The year 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of our podcast, Pass The Mic.
I distinctly remember driving back to Jackson, Mississippi from a conference in Minneapolis (a 15 hour trip!) and talking about the idea of starting a podcast.
We did start a podcast, but it wasn’t the polished production machine you see now.
Sometimes we only had one mic to share between us. We had to do a whole lot of experimenting to figure out the tech. And it took us years to figure out the specific identity of the podcast.
But 10 years and more than 6 million downloads later, Pass The Mic is celebrating this milestone with a series called “Not the Voice, the Microphone: The Pass The Mic Story.”
You will hear tales from our origin story that we’ve never revealed before on mic. You’ll get a chance to hear some names and events that you probably haven’t thought about in years. You will relive some of the most tumultuous controversies and turning points that made us who we are today.
Shout out to our award-winning producer, and the person who has been with us the entire way, Beau York. He has gone above and beyond in this series by digging up audio clips from some of our very first episodes.
I genuinely think this is a production job worthy of another podcasting award.
My co-host, Tyler Burns, and I extend our deepest thanks to you, our listeners. Even to this day, we each encounter listeners like you who tell us how much our show has impacted their life and faith journey.
And, of course, they always quote Tyler Burns’ infamous introduction of me: “The man, the myth, the legend…”
Listen to Part 1 of this multi-part series below, and we’ll see you soon on the next…Pass The Mic!

Thank you for making the trip to Minneapolis again in October 2019. I first heard you speak then, and that experience was a catalyst in my quest to better understand racism in America. The death of George Floyd on our streets 7 months later showed how much Minneapolis needs your wisdom and historical knowledge Dr Tisby. I look forward to the anniversary podcast.
Yessss! “The man, the myth, the legend...!” I always smile and settle in to listen when I hear the intro! This podcast is a top favorite not only for content but for the rapport and genuine exchanges between you and Tyler! Congrats and blessings on an important milestone. 🙏🏽🩷
