Had a fantastic time at the Jesus x Justice conference hosted by Christians Seeking Justice. But I’m wiped! Nevertheless, I *had* to tell you about this event. Your support gives me the ability to speak around the country and encourage us at this critical time. Will you become a paid subscriber today?
Isolation is one of the worst consequences of our current political climate.
In my travels around the country, I sense a deep sadness in people.
It's in their eyes. It's in their tone of voice. It's in the wistful, somber way they talk about their former faith communities.
Their conviction to pursue racial justice, the rights of immigrants, the dignity of women--all that Jesus stuff--has made them strangers from the churches and fellowships they once called home.
So many people feel like they are on a lonely island amid a sea of paranoia, prejudice, and power grabs that now characterize vast swaths of people who claim to be Christians.
Dwell too long in the land of loneliness and isolation, and you will find yourself mired in the quicksand of despair.
We need someone to throw us a rope, and pull us out of the morass. We need to be reminded that we are not alone.
There are others who are similarly disgusted with the hypocrisy they see in the church. Others who recoil at Christians claiming there is only one "true" Christian way to vote. Others who see the pivotal moment for our nation this presidential election represents.
If you're one of those people who needs to be reminded that you are not alone, then this is the perfect event for you.
You're invited to the Faith and Democracy Tour hosted by the Convocation Unscripted podcast crew. I'll be there with Diana Butler Bass, Robert P. Jones, and Kristin du Mez.
We're headed to two sites in swing states:
Greensboro, North Carolina
Tempe, Arizona.
This is a non-partisan gathering of Christians who value democracy and want to protect and extend it.
We'll have music, signs ups for local political mobilization, and lots of good conversation and laughter.
Even if you're not in the area, you can pass along this information to people you know and share in your networks.
We kick things off on October 13 in Greensboro, NC.
The event is FREE! All you have to do is register.
You are not alone. Join us at the Faith and Democracy rally and connect with a community you never knew you had.
There is more than one way to engage in faith and politics. I talk about the Black Christian tradition and many historical heroes who worked for greater civil right and political participation in The Spirit of Justice: True Stories of Faith, Race, and Resistance. Get your copy today!
It was wonderful hearing you speak at Jesus & Justice II! Thank you so much for agreeing to come speak to us. I forgot my book in my hotel, but I bought another so you could sign it. It gives me an opportunity to gift the one I left in my room. Now to think of who would benefit the most.
I bought your book as well and look forward to reading it. However I need to finish Vice-president Harris's book first. What an amazing woman!
