Typically, the word “crusade” is a throwback to the wave of religious conflicts where medieval Christians tried to “take back” the Holy Land from expanding Muslim empires.
Roman Catholic popes blessed these so-called holy wars and claimed the resulting brutality—which included the theft of priceless cultural artifacts and the massacre of women and children—had the divine sanction of God.
The White Christian Nationalist Crusade
Right now there are some extreme elements on the far-right who see themselves as part of a new crusade—the crusade of white Christian nationalism.
The deep story of white Christian nationalism says that in order to restore the nation to its favored place in God’s plan, righteous Christian soldiers and activists have to take action—preferably political action.
Whether you are a Christian, a person of another faith, or you don’t practice a religion at all, we have to realize that the white Christian nationalism chases power by stripping it from others, all under the banner of a divinely-sanctioned crusade.
In this short video for The Emancipator, I explain more about the white Christian nationalist crusade and how its adherents seek to roll back democracy in the name of God.
