Have you ever tried to explain racism to a young person? It’s hard!
On one level, racism doesn’t make any sense. We look at someone’s skin color and come up with this term called “race.” Then assign a value based on that arbitrary physical feature and practice something called “racism.”
And who we consider part of which race changes over time. So one person who might have been considered part of one race at one point is part of another race at a different point.
And let’s not even get started on people (most of us!) who have more than one “race” in our ancestry.
But even though racism doesn’t make much sense, it is very real.
People came up with a system to exploit the labor of the people of one race and set people of another race against those laborers. But only a very select few very wealthy people of a certain race actually benefited from the system.
How are you supposed to break all this down for kids?!?
If it seems overwhelming, don’t worry. You have help.
These videos are part of a series for the online book club for How to Fight Racism Young Readers Edition.
In the first episode, I explain what race is and how racism functions. In the second episode I talk about racial identity and how we can learn more about who we really are.
This is a six-part series, so more to come! In the meantime, watch the videos below with kids 8-years old and up. And be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any new videos!
