Three Reasons You Should Watch the "God and Country" Film
Join me for a special documentary screening hosted by Red, Wine, and Blue
Here are three reasons why you should join us to watch a special online screening of the documentary film “God and Country” on Thursday (7/25).
1. You Become an Expert on White Christian Nationalism
Okay, so maybe not an “expert”, but you’ll definitely learn more than ever about this critical topic.
White Christian nationalism is the greatest threat to democracy and the witness of the church today.
The entire film shows how white Christian nationalism is affecting our faith and politics. The topic only becomes more relevant as we move closer to the presidential election.
2. You Can Invite Others to Watch the Film
White Christian nationalism is not a binary—you either are or aren’t one. Rather it exists on a spectrum.
According to one taxonomy: Rejecters - Resisters - Accommodators - Ambassadors.
Ambassadors hold mostly tightly to white Christian nationalism’s tenets, and they will almost certainly not change their minds anytime soon. But Accommodators might be persuaded to question these beliefs if exposed to new information.
So invite your accommodator friends and family members to watch the movie and discuss it afterward. You can also invite church members and friends so you all have a shared experience and information to move forward.
3. You Will Feel a Sense of Solidarity with Others
At times we can feel like the only one, or one of a few, who see white Christian nationalism in our circles.
It can feel lonely when so many around us seem to cling to these pernicious ideas about God and country.
You are not alone. You are part of a dispersed community united by a concern to preserve democracy and a passion to model the life of Jesus in word and deed.
In this film you will hear experts, most of whom are also practicing Christians, talk very personally about how white Christian nationalism has affected their communities.
In this sharing you will find solidarity and encouragement.
I am collaborating with Red, Wine, and Blue on a special screening of the “God and Country” film.

Want to learn more about Christian Nationalism and the impact it could have on our democracy?
Join us for a special screening and discussion of the documentary God & Country.
The film discusses the growth of Christian nationalism and its entanglement with extremist politics in the United States. This documentary is based on Katherine Stewart’s book The Power Worshippers. We are thrilled to welcome both Katherine and Dr. Jemar Tisby, who appears in the documentary, as guests at our post-viewing discussion. You can watch the movie on your own or join us for an interactive viewing. Details in the confirmation email.
See you there!
For an alternative witness of faith and politics, learn from people such as Shirley Chisholm and Unita Blackwell whom I profile in my book “The Spirit of Justice”. Available for pre-order now!
A small group of us joined together from many houses of worship and are showing God and Country twice; once at St. Andres Presbyterian Church (and I am catching a little flack... but, SO??) and once in Iowa City Public Library. We will have a discussion following the viewings. I hope to show Bad Faith and Against All Enemies also before November.
I saw this movie in a local theater screening. It is very good. I also have seen the movie, “Bad Faith”.
It was good also!
