It’s cotton season in the Delta. Late September brings the blooming of fluffy fields of cotton. Harvest time is just around the corner.
It was the attempt to get fair prices for the cotton they picked that led to the massacre of Black sharecroppers on September 30-October 2 in 1919.
The Elaine Massacre has not had the attention it deserves. This is a tragic moment that we should know about and learn from. This is not simply Black history, it is American history.
