It's good to hear this perspective. Our little New England town will celebrate Juneteenth this Saturday. I've been posting fliers and will volunteer at the event featuring: a pop-up marketplace showcasing Black-owned businesses, food trucks, student and community speakers, live music and DJ sets, educational program and interactive experiences. Thanks to Jemar introducing me to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in conjunction w/ Juneteenth last year, I'll be able to join in the invitation to sing in a more meaningful way.
Enjoy a restful Juneteenth, Dr. Tisby! I've noted our local public library & Habitat for Humanity ReStore are closed for Juneteenth 2025 to give employees a day of rest too. And I see the APNews has an online header of "Juneteenth" (after "No Kings Day Protests" for 6/14 weekend). I just wish APNews featured Dr. Tisby's excellent writings and teach-ins on Juneteenth!
Amen! I too am a volunteer in the service of talking about racial justice, and social justice broadly. It is a calling and a labor of love. But labor it is, and I do gets tired! Although Juneteenth is a paid holiday at my day job, CHOOSING to rest on this day honors our ancestors and feeds our souls. Thank you for this reminder.
Your reasons are very legit. I am going to attend my local celebration because I know how it feels to work to organize an event and to hope for a big turnout.
I pray and celebrate with you in rest, family and commitment. You continue to help us know the real meaning of this struggle. While the whole world seems to be circling the drain, you always remind me how important historical truth is and to speak out with grace but also firmness.
I love this perspective, and hope you enjoy a restful Juneteenth!
