As a resident of PA, my immediate thought was "...and Josh Shapiro for VP". Between the two of them he and Harris really do cover all the bases. Hoping it might come true. Meanwhile thanks and kudos to President Biden for making what must have been a heartbreaking decision. Prayers for him and his family, and for the VP and her family.

Beautifully said. Treena and I wrote him an email straight away admiring his incredible move ... truly self sacrificing. And it is so wonderful he did this so a Black woman could step up.

Biden proved yesterday that he is a man of integrity who puts the good of the country over his personal ambitions. I’m hopeful that Kamala will be president. I feel an excitement I haven’t since Obama was running. I hope this excitement will spread. I’d love nothing more than to see DJT lose again, especially to a black woman.

I was working outside in the garden when a friend texted me that Biden had withdrawn from the race. I burst into tears of the greatest respect, admiration, and gratitude for Biden's love of his country, for putting our country first. He is a true patriot in every sense of the word. I was crying because i was overcome by a tremendous sense of relief, like a heavy cloak of anxiety being taken off my shoulders. I think Joe Biden has been a fabulous president, and I was terrified of him staying in the race. I believe his withdrawal from the race will be part of his greatest legacy as our President. I am 100% behind Kamala Harris for President, because she is a black women and because I think she is the best person to prosecute the election in support of the founding virtues of our country - liberty and equality for all people. I hope Ms. Harris will frame the issues of the campaign in light of the true Gospel - the Gospel of loving our neighbors as ourselves - therefore we joyfully strive to provide for health care, quality education, the right to express our voices at the ballot box, decent housing and food security for our neighbors. We have the very best candidate, so let's get to work and do everything we can to ensure that she is the next President of the United States!

I can't imagine a more gracious exit and a more perfect and exciting candidate to be my next POTUS. Finally, some GOOD 'unprecedented times'. My OG 'KAMALA' T-shirt is pressed and reactivated for service.

I had intended yesterday to be a day of respite from media- I’ve been living with a sense of exhaustion and dread since the debate. Don’t get me wrong- I fully supported Biden but his recent signs of frailty were hitting a little close to home as I have been having hard conversations with my elderly mother about “the car keys etc “. Now I feel gratitude for President Biden and excitement for Vice President Harris - what a fantastic leader she is and will be as Commander in Chief!

I'm so thankful for Biden's decision. I think people underestimate the costliness of it and are thus complaining that it "took so long."

As a Jewish believer, and despite my reluctance to create conflict, I must speak to the use of the word genocide in connection with the Gaza situation.

I have no use for the Jewish Trump--aka Netanyahu.

I grieve for those who are innocent and caught in the horrible fighting in Gaza.

And I believe that the military has been too caught up in the battles for their own democracy (cf Jewish Trump) to pay proper attention, and was therefor caught with their pants down on 10/7 and reacted in knee jerk fashion afterwards.

However--I beg you, brothers and sisters, to help me understand how the Israelis should have responded to 10/7. Hamas is a terrorist group who have made no secret of their desire to wipe out the only guaranteed refuge the Jewish people have, and who planned this operation precisely to achieve the effect they have achieved. (Yes, friends, "from the River to the Sea is itself a call for genocide." They have used the population of Gaza as human shields. And they continue to hold hostages, some of whom are still alive. Please tell me--what would you have the Israelis do?

I fought of tears because I was in a department store, but the relief from anxiety and simultaneous gratitude and appreciation for the self sacrifice after pouring 50 years into service for our country completely caught me off guard! I wished I could have had a GOOD cry! My stress over the direction this race was heading had me seriously contemplating a reasonable country to flee to! I actually have a glimmer of hope again. Thank you President Biden! May God Bless you! 🙏

We already have a white guy who can appeal to midwesterners on the ticket: Joe Biden.

Joe needs Kamala. Kamala needs Joe. Over 81 million voters were not wrong in 2020. Thousands who voted for the ticket in the primaries weren't wrong either. Let's not add agism to racism and sexism...My vote for "Person(s) of the Year again is the Harris-Biden ticket.

I just recently reluctantly concluded that it was time for Biden to step down but I had also concluded that if he didn’t support Harris as the nominee, I wasn’t even going to vote because then it would have been clear the problem was white men in general but just MAGA white men. So glad I was wrong!

I have been praying every day for Joe to step down. I eagerly opened your piece this morning to see if a respected historian would confirm that my thinking was sound. THANK YOU. This is very helpful.
