ICYMI: A Conversation about Christian Nationalism on NPR's 1A
Here's the link to our interview, in case you missed it!
My passion is to speak the truth in love about racism, especially as expressed in ideologies such as Christian Nationalism. Will you support this effort by becoming a subscriber?
Christian Nationalism is an ethnocultural ideology that uses Christian symbolism to create a permission structure for the acquisition of political power and social control.
The impact of Christian Nationalism appears in electoral politics, matters of gender and sexuality, problems of racism, and more.
To cite just one example, adherents of Christian Nationalism put themselves on notorious display during the attempted insurrection on January 6, 2021.
Until recently, national news media has given scant attention to this pernicious ideology. I was, therefore, encouraged to be invited as a guest panelist on NPR’s 1A radio show.
The other guests included Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist and author of Taking America Back for God, and Katherine Stewart, and investigative journalist and author of The Power Worshipers.

They had to shorten the show for their podcast feed. As a result, they cut out several portions including a statement where I contrast Christian Nationalism and the “Christianity of Christ.”
I encourage you to listen to the full episode HERE.
Here are some quotes from the show.
One more thing…
I think Christian Nationalism is such an important topic that I’m dedicating my next Teach-In to the subject.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 21 at 7 pm CT. It will be broadcast on Facebook Live and YouTube Live (be sure to follow to both pages!). More info to follow.
I enjoyed the discussion. But I would have liked to hear more about how the cultural beliefs underpin the strength of the movement. This would be things like the pilgrims and Thanksgiving dinner, manifest destiny, God and military service, & Patriotic hymns at church on the Fourth of July. Can we talk more about the power of pluralism and diversity in making democracy work?
Thank you for quoting the words of the celebratory creed at the beginning of the Ku Klux Klan. The similarity in their creed and the creed of White Christian Nationalists is scary. I also liked the comeback "Which brand of Christianity are you promoting?" To me that meant "Will (Catholicism, Methodism, Baptist, et.al.) become our national religion?"
