Introducing the How to Fight Racism Young Readers Edition Total Package!
I've been working hard to make sure you and your kids can access these resources in a variety of learning styles.
In addition to coming up with all the content for this package, I also paid for the podcast and video production out-of-pocket. I’m happy to do it because I truly believe in this work. But if you’d like to keep seeing resources like these and more, I hope you’ll consider becoming a paid subscriber.
Even though I wrote a book to help kids fight racism, it hasn’t exactly taken off in my own home.
My kid is insatiably (sometimes exhaustingly!) curious, has a laugh that forces you to smile in mirth, and the biggest brown eyes that can pull your attention away from any screen or task that might otherwise occupy you.
My child is a lot of wonderful things. One thing he is not is a reader.
He knows how to read, of course, but he’s got some difficulties that make reading less than enjoyable. Although he loves learning, handing him a book is likely to get you a groan and a long negotiation about reading in exchange for some other more pleasurable task.
It’s simple. Not all kids like reading. But all kids like to learn, no matter how they try to hide it. Adults have to figure out the best ways to help kids learn, and that might include more than just words on a page.
That’s why I’m thrilled to share with you the How to Fight Racism Young Readers package!
This suite of products geared for kids 8-years old and up consists of three items:
The Book
How to Fight Racism Young Readers Edition came out on January 4, 2022. It’s a just-in-time resource as bills designed to curtail the robust teaching of our nation’s racial history are coursing through states across the nation. The book is available in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook formats. this is the only item you’ll have to pay for, the rest are free!
The Podcast
This may be the most exciting part for me because I got to sit down with real-live students and talk about how to fight racism! You’ll meet six students from Clarksdale Collegiate in the Mississippi Delta. They’ll impress and inspire you and the kids in your life with their wit and knowledge. Along the way, you’ll hear compelling stories about kids who made a difference for justice and dignity. Each episode is ab out 15 minutes and you can listen to them on the commute to or from school, the grocery store, or practice.
The Videos
For the visual learners (like me!) we’ve got six episodes about how to fight racism complete with pictures and video clips to make the content come alive! Head over to my YouTube page and watch the whole series. They will serve as a springboard to deeper conversation about racism, justice, and valuing our differences.
The podcast and the videos are ABSOLUTELY FREE to you. Just listen and watch with the young people in your life.
You can start anywhere: listen, watch, or read. I hope you’ll pick up the book to have in your library.
I suggest doing this in community. Gather some kids (and a few adults) and go through this material.
Whether the kids in your life love to read, listen, or watch this package of materials has something for everyone! This is the total package!
Young people have always participated in the fight against racism. But it’s up to the adults who love them to equip them to make a difference. You can take the next step today.
If this civil rights moment is going to become a movement, it’s going to take all of us.
Jemar, Your drive to change the trajectory of our culture inspires me. Thank you for being a beacon of hope and action.
I am a Literacy Tutor helping students become even better readers. My students range from Kindergarten-4th grade. The 2nd-4th graders are from 6 months to two grade levels behind in reading. The K students are not keeping up learning letter names, so letter sounds and phonics are not their forte either. I see improvement quickly with K & 1st graders, they are amazing sponges when they catch on to the methodology. Second-fourth graders move at a variety of places yet I strive not to give up or give in so they value that.
The sessions are 20 minutes, one-on-one. We can do online...I am familiar with it due to the many months of Covid preventing in-person sessions.

This is so exciting! I would love to have something on video that is shorter (around 10 minutes) to use with younger kids with shorter attention spans.
