I’ve been researching the intersection of the religious right, politics, and race especially from the vantage point of my alma mater BJU. It’s very disheartening to see how much of the rightwing politics comes out of BJU’s four lawsuits over interracial marriage.
I think the most revealing part for me was when I read a press release from this time. It stated in effect that it didn’t matter if they were biblically accurate, it mattered that they had the right to believe what they wanted to believe. In saying this, they put the constitution above the Word of God.
