The next two installments of “Those Meddling Kids: Unpacking the Anti-CRT Crusade in Christian Higher Ed” are live!
Episode 3- “A History of Racism in Christian Higher Ed” with Dr. Otis Pickett
Conservative Christian colleges and universities are often some of the worst places for learning about racial justice.
A disturbing number of them are beginning to join the anti-CRT crusade, so it can be extremely difficult for students to learn what they need about racism and what to do about it? How did it get this way?
Dr. Otis Pickett is the University Historian at Clemson University. His area of study focuses on race and the church in the 19th century and earlier. He has worked at Mississippi College and was instrumental in helping the school make proactive steps toward racial justice. Follow him at @OtisWPickett.
Episode 4 - “White Christian Nationalism in Christian Higher Ed” with Dr. Andrew Whitehead
The ideology behind the anti-CRT crusade is white Christian Nationalism. More concerned with power than piety, the culture wars than Christ—what are the signs of white Christian Nationalism? How can you detect it and what can you do about it?
Andrew Whitehead is a sociologist and Director of the Association of Religion Data Archives. He is also the co-author of Taking America Back for God.
In this episode he explains the link between the anti-CRT crusade and the dangerous ideology of Christian Nationalism. Follow him at @ndrewwhitehead.

great discussion. Particularly: "when it comes down to [choice between] demoracy and power, Christian nationalism is going to choose power every time." Very true. I would add that the danger lies in the degree to which these themes are being weaponized and used in political propaganda and campaigns (e.g. GOP governors Youngkin, DeSantis) to gain control of state governments and then pass laws that further spread anti-CRT propaganda message, and affect state policies and public education curricula. Which ironically proves a crucial part of actual critical race theory-- that inequalities and social biases can become embedded in laws and policies, and can become part of a broader structure of discrimination that exists separate and apart from the force of the collective effect of individuals' racial biases.
