I think it's this: https://store.thekingcenter.org/products/nv365-course

and be sure to enter the code TISBY50 if it doesn't automatically reduce the cost to $50.

Good morning, Jemar. I followed the link last week to sign up for the nonviolence training. It took me to the King Center. I signed up. The cost was $79. Im not concerned about the discount, but I don't want to miss out on the training with you. Is there something I missed when signing up? Thanks and have a good Thursday!

For me a very powerful Scripture passage is one that refutes the passivity I was taught within the authoritarianism of white evangelical circles across decades in areas that are now known for being steeped in both Christian Dominionism and Trumpism.

Dr. Obery Hendricks Jr. clarifies Matthew 5:38-41, "Strategy Six: Take Blows Without Returning Them" in chapter 4, "Messiah and Tactician: The Political Strategies of Jesus, within the book, "The Politics of Jesus." I love Dr. Hendricks Jr.'s clarification; I really recommend the read!

Excerpt (but really need the entirety for more context and clarification) including that the author explains that culturally then, striking the cheek was a back-handed slap that was more of an insult done by people to their inferiors... ie: man to woman, parent to child, boss to worker, etc.)

"But when we look more closely at the Gospel account we see that Jesus counseled not resignation and passivity, but a definite action: to offer the other cheek. Why? Because by taking an action, the powerless and the oppressed became more than victims; they became actors who asserted their humanity, their 'somebodyness.' By turning the other cheek they took back their dignity and refused to be defined by those in power. Instead, they defined themselves, and their self-definition was this: that they were not inferior beings, and they would not perpetuate that fiction by hanging their heads. Rather, voluntary submission to additional insult said 'Strike me again if you like, insult me again, but I no longer care what you think of me. I now define myself.' Thus turning the other cheek made a bold statement of equality of humanity and self-worth....In other words, turning the other cheek was an act of self-determination."

This has been very helpful in my own life yet I need to learn and practice nonviolence for the sake of justice for people.

Thank you Jemar, what a reminder of the strength of grace. I came of age in the 60s, and I admit that I neither knew God, I knew of Him but did not know Him, nor did I know myself; I viewed the nonviolent protesters through the lens of Black Power. Admittedly, as a young man, near 20 years of age, and in the military, and who neither knew God, nor knew himself, I didn’t have the inner strength, nor, because of my military status, the opportunity to participate in protests. The bravery, the strength of Will and determination of the protesters I now fully appreciate. God chooses His soldiers. 🙏🏾

Neither the linked training nor the workplace training offered as self-paced through the Center appear to be the live event described. If it is possible to view the recorded event after the fact by purchasing once it is over, I would love to do that. Thanks so much.

I liked this article on John Lewis ad how he was spurred by his Christian faith, use of seminary learning, and the principles of nonviolence. https://open.substack.com/pub/50501/p/john-lewis-a-tribute?r=518mt6&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

It was great to be part of "Good Trouble Day" honoring John Lewis. I'm excited to learn and continue honoring one of our great examples.

So I saw below a link to the King Center and saw your comments about paying and dropping down and paying $50 rather than $79 once you sign up (if you're a Tisby subscriber, which I am) but all I found was the King 365 non-violence training - which I signed up for and paid $79 for to find out it wasn't the same thing. This is rediculous.

I came across a more than 200 page book titled Part two, the methods of nonviolent action. Written by Gene Sharpe, it was published in 1973 by the Albert Einstein institution.. It is well organized well written and amply footnoted. I think it could be a valuable background research tool. If you’re interested, I would be glad to send it on to you.
