Thank you for reposting this article. It is good to remember Rev. Clementa Pickney (41), Cynthia Hurd (54), Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (45), Tywanza Sanders (26), Ethel Lance (70), Susie Jackson (87), Depayne Middleton Doctor (49), Rev. Daniel Simmons (74) and Myra Thompson (54). News coverage after the incident highlighted all of their contributions, not only to the city of Charleston, but the entire state of South Carolina. Truly, Charleston lost many of her best citizens that day.

I lived near North Charleston, SC at the time of the shootings. A co-worker attended that bible study, but had to leave early. My church hosted the families of the victims during the trial of the now convicted murderer. Walter Scott was killed one mile from my home.

As a white person, I am still struggling to find my place in creating a truly just society. Perhaps small actions from many of us can help turn the tide of hate.
