I began reading AND listening to “The Spirit of Justice.” As someone who greatly appreciates history I find Dr. Tisby’s approach scholarly and enlightening. Thank you for giving us the 400+ year backdrop to the transatlantic slave trade and oppression of Africans once in the Americas. As in “The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church's Complicity in Racism,” the church contributed to the political motivations to keep enslavement legal. In our present times, “The Spirit of Justice” serves as both a reminder and warning about how we should live out our lives as Jesus followers. Thank you, Dr. Tisby!

The book embodies “The Spirit of Justice” providing inspiration, hope, & joy amidst courageous truth-telling with historical sources. I love learning about our ancestors, who I hadn’t learned of yet. I experience the book as balm and "fire in my heart" (not "fire in my hair") per "The Spirit of Justice." Let’s get our book discussion groups ready!

Also, I appreciated the early statement: “People of any religion or none at all can and do pursue the common good from common grace--a blessing bestowed on all humanity."
For me as a Christian, I think this is a great example of "all truth is God's truth." Who treats people with respect, dignity, & justice? Let me learn from these folks pursuing the common good. (Such folks are also living more according to what Jesus of Nazareth described in the story of the Good Samaritan & taught about loving one’s neighbor.) I learn from humanity how to pursue the common good too.
