After Raphael Warrnock became a candidate in Georgia and I learned he was a minister, I started listening to some of his sermons. It was uplifting, and challenging to my ideas. I also listen to Rev. Dr. Jacqi Lewis of Middle Collegiate Church in New York. Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney’s blog and books.

Seminary Saturdays, Jan 2025:

Dr. Obery M Hendricks speaker hosted by "Alfred Street Baptist Church Live Seminary Saturday Jan 4, 2025" https://www.youtube.com/live/0RCvwlmzBWg?si=zyG4mbCBDx4KIvKm

I appreciate Dr. Hendrick’s including the context of the origins of the Christian faith including Jesus of Nazareth’s life during a time of oppression & poverty—including impact of trauma & poverty.

I have for many years noted that the two people I am most proud to share my birthday with are Dietrich Bonhoeffer (February 4, 1906) and....Rosa Parks (February 4, 1913). February 4th is also the day that France outlawed slavery in all of its colonies.

This is one of my favorites (of many) of Dr. Tisby's posts. My sharing this post with Christian friends seemed to garner the strongest response--including my being "racist" to emphasize my appreciation for the Black Church in the U.S. past & present & my passions to center non-white voices. I've learned that how my friends & family express themselves & what they ban/censor with me personally, seems to reflect across the nation within many Christian communities infused with/centering whiteness & white Christian nationalism.

2nd comment.

All three of Eric Metaxas books (on Luther, Wilberforce, and Bonhoeffer) obscure the difference between classic conservative Christianity and America's white Evangelicalism. The former has many many problems of its own but the latter is far more perverse and a gross distortion of the former.

Metaxas' book on Bonhoeffer is distorted is at least half a dozen ways. The family/descendants of Bonhoeffer have voiced their objections to it, and he has retorted with crude and vulgar insults directed towards them.

Last year's Bonhoeffer movie was independently produced, but after a conservative film company bought the distribution rights to it, they then(!) changed its title to match Metaxas' book and added a publicity poster which has Bonheoffer looking like James Bond holding a gun. The actors in this movie have also voiced objections to this and to Metaxas generally. (The movie is pretty good, but you are giving money to Angel Films if you watch it.)

Ironically, Metaxas is very anti-gay, while the better Bonhoeffer book (Strange Glory) argues fairly convincingly that Bonhoeffer himself was probably bisexual.
