When Fiction Feels Like Truth

A conversation about "Andor", courage, fiction, and the truths only stories can tell

I had to drop some tasks and re-arrange a bunch more to make this episode happen. It’s my joy to do it, but it is labor. Now’s your opportunity to support this kind of conversation that links art, faith, and politics. Become a paid subscriber.

Can art reach people in ways that books, sermons, or news reports can’t?

That’s the fundamental question I’ve been asking myself as I watch the Andor series streaming on Disney+.

Earlier this week I posted an article about my thoughts on the series, which takes place in the Star Wars universe, and I was actually pretty nervous.

I’m not a Star Wars mega-fan. Nor do I often talk about pop culture on my Substack.

But the response has been amazing. So many people who have been watching the series resonated with what I shared. So many others are now vowing to tune in and see for themselves.

I wanted to go a little deeper with you, so I brought in an expert.

My good friend and producer, Beau York, is a self-professed Star Wars geek.

When I asked him what he thought about the series let’s just say, “He had thoughts!”

We connect this fictional tale with the real world and discover some chilling parallels.

In the end, maybe truth is stranger than fiction, but fiction can help us access that strange truth in new ways.

P.S. Beau made the graphic for this article! 😂😂😂

Do you think watching a series like Andor (or another fictional tv or movie) would help a MAGA supporter see what’s going on between empire and resistance more clearly? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments.
