There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about white Christian nationalism—the threat to democracy, how it harms the witness of the church, the violence that supports it exclusionary visions—but we are not helpless in the face of this dangerous ideology.
People of conscience and people of faith can resist white Christian nationalism. We can learn how to identify it. We can point it out to others who may not be aware. Most of all, we can present in our words and our lives a better way to live and love our neighbors.
In the lead up to this series, many people said they were most looking forward to this episode, and for good reason.
Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of the BJC, has been resisting white Christian nationalism for a long time. Her and her team created Christians Against Christian Nationalism years ago, and it has grown into a comprehensive resource we all need.
In episode 4 of “White Nation Under God” listen to my conversation with Amanda Tyler, “How Christians Can Resist White Christian Nationalism.”
How Christians Can Resist White Christian Nationalism with Amanda Tyler
White Christian Nationalists use Christianity as cover for their anti-democratic and repressive ideology. So other Christians have the responsibility and opportunity to resist this misuse of their religion and present a better way. Thankfully, some leaders are doing just that. Amanda Tyler is the Executive Director of BJC, and her organization was instrumental in creating "Christians Against Christian Nationalism" a comprehensive resource for people of faith who want to take action.

“One big misunderstanding about religious freedom right now is this false idea that religious freedom means you have a right for the government’s laws to reflect your religious views or your theology...That’s not religious freedom. That’s theocracy.” Thank you, Amanda Tyler! What an incredibly helpful and practical conversation. And I so appreciate being pointed to the many resources on the Christians Against Christian Nationalism site. I’m navigating there presently.
Amazing, illuminating and helpful discussion. Thank you. The elicitation of the question how genuine can coerced Christianity be was impressive. The resources listed will be pursued. Baked in is indeed much of the dilemma; a long struggle faces us.
