What a fabulous idea Jemar! I had trouble finding this documentary to stream. Finally I was able to see it this past weekend two times, with others, and we all agreed what an important film it is. Your contributions lent gravitas to it. Praying many will see it through your initiative.
Ty for asking Jemar! 1) The film is filled with important content/context and I picked up things missed in the first viewing- plus it is so helpful to discuss with others too to see what struck them!
2) Tho I am not on social I reached out to members of my NYC church and also friends across the country (some in conservative places who may be knee deep into Christian nationalism) who I hope will watch it with an open mind.
3) In case helpful to anyone, here are some points I made about it in my email: "Can’t recommend this documentary enough about white Christian Nationalism and the threat it poses to our democracy and the American church. It was a good collection of Christian leaders I have a lot of time for - from Russell Moore to David French to Kristin du Mez in addition to Jemar Tisby. Think about joining in with Jemar and his virtual streaming event on 4/25 at 8 pm EST. Even consider getting the word out to others who might be open or curious about all this we hear about Christian Nationalism today. This perversion of gospel faith was one of the driving forces behind the Jan 6 insurrection at the Capitol. And finally, it is also an impt issue to pray about … there is an ugly racism that factors into some parts of this movement, all in the name of Christ sadly."
I don't have questions because I have been well taught I think from your most helpful Christian Nationalism series / various talks. Ty for all you are doing to get the word out Jemar!
I am SO GRATEFUL you shared this with some of your folks at church (I'd love to get to NYC for the Spirit of Justice book tour this fall, if you know folks willing to co/host).
There's a lot more to be aware of with WCN and the landscape is changing all the time. I hope you'll consider checking out the White Christian Nationalism 101 class I'm doing in May. Stay tuned for more detials.
Yes, it feels less alone with a group of people learning together for advocacy to counter the risks. I learned from all the voices in the film. Personally, I'd like to hear from yourself, Bishop Dr. William Barber II & Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez. I'd like to hear from Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez about her specialty area of study that she mentioned in the film. (I note some similarities to the times of Dietrich Bonhoeffer & some folks; maybe your wCN 101 course will cover more.) Another question: what more would you like to say or that was cut from the film due to its time constraints? I hope to capture Rev Dr. Barber's quotes this time. Thanks again!
I have watched it once - was only showing for two days in a county near us. I will watch it with you again on the 27th so I can learn more and be able to better discuss it. I've listened to most everything you've posted on your "Footnotes" podcast about it as well as reading books you've recommended, e.g. Andrew Whitehead's "American Idolatry". I'll think of some questions to ask during the showing.
I saw the movie and thought it was excellent. The violence inherent in this movement is frightening. I read Dr. Butler's book, and would have liked to hear a little more from her.
Will indeed join in to the May class. Have been grateful that many I emailed re Th have committed to signing up for this Th film ! And praying for more friends in NYC to surface and bring about a co host for your upcoming book launch here. Will also enlist Danielle Wilson to pray re this since we have talked about a NYC Witness event materializing in the future ☝️🙏👊
Jemar you have no idea what a lifeline Joy and Justice 2023 was for me. I am close to someone who works at the AG headquarters and the movie describes many things I have seen in real time. Thank you for your courage. I saw the movie in theaters and purchased it when it became available on streaming. I am looking forward to the group viewing, because understanding these truths where I was raised has been a lonely and isolating road.
Have seen the movie and would highly recommend it...
Appreciate you watching! Did you have any questions or observations?

Two times! Thanks for your dedication! Any questions or observations you'd like to share?

I love your questions! I'll see who else from the film can join us. And I'm eager to address your question of what was left out!
Thank you! I hope all 4 women can join too. I appreciate Sister Simone Campbell's impactful speaking in the film also.
Please, please schedule another showing with a bit more advanced notice.
There may be other people who host a showing (no plans right now). But if it goes well, I'd like to do more virtual screenings with other films.

Dr. Butler is brilliant. We can all learn so much more from her.

Inspired by this post to rent from Prime and watch with extended family. Production and presentation is excellent! Now for the discussion…

Got signed up! Will a link be sent?
I *think* Kinema will send push emails to remind you. But even if they don’t, you just have to login and go to “tickets.” Then click and you’re in!
